Report: Moscow circus 'demo'

The leafleting/pro-Moscow circus demo was the result of great teamwork (and the helpfulness of the internet):

Taffy Williams of NY Whale and Dolphin Action League told me about this circus - as I said, there was ZERO advance press, posters, etc.

When we realized it was getting no promotion, Julie Serenson of Friends of the Yonkers Animal Shelter created a poster announcing the Moscow circus (which is animal-free).  We personally distributed it to stores, churches, etc.

When I announced we were going to attend, Molly Hamilton-Mann inquired about what we were going to leaflet with.  My intention was to just use Peta circus-animal cruelty leaflets.  Molly suggested we create a THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING AN ANIMAL-FREE CIRCUS flyer.  I realized she was right.   This is the flyer I created:

THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING AN ANIMAL - FREE  CIRCUS TODAY!

BUT FOR THE USE OF PHYSICAL PUNISHMENT BY THEIR OPPRESSORS, ANIMALS WOULD NEVER BE A PART OF A CIRCUS
-   ACTOR/COMEDIAN RICHARD PRYOR,

TO FORCE WILD ANIMALS TO PERFORM UNNATURAL ACTS, TRAINERS USE WHIPS, MUZZLES, ELECTRIC PRODS AND BULLHOOKS.  IN THEIR REAL HOMES, THESE ANIMALS WOULD BE FREE TO RAISE THEIR FAMILIES, FORAGE FOR FOOD AND PLAY TOGETHER.  INSTEAD THE CIRCUS FORCES THEM TO PERFORM NIGHT AFTER NIGHT, FOR 50 WEEKS EVERY YEAR.  BETWEEN ACTS, ELEPHANTS ARE KEPT CHAINED AND TIGERS ARE STORED IN CAGES WITH BARELY ENOUGH ROOM TO TAKE ONE STEP.  A CIRCUS TIGER DIED OF HEAT STROKE ON JULY 14 WHILE RIDING IN A POORLY VENTILATED BOXCAR.  FOR MORE CIRCUS TRAGEDIES VISIT WWW.CIRCUSES.COM

THERE ARE ALSO PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERNS : AS WELL AS DOCUMENTED RAMPAGES IN NYS, A CIRCUS TRIED TO BRING TB-INFECTED ELEPHANTS INTO WESTCHESTER COUNTY.  ANY RESULTING LAWSUITS COULD EFFECT PROPERTY TAXES.

PLEASE TELL YONKERS MAYOR PHILIP AMICONE AND COUNTY EXECUTIVE ANDREW SPANO HOW MUCH YOU ENJOYED THIS CIRCUS!

Andrew Spano:    [email protected]

One other activist also came to help - thanks, Julie! Every person and organization who is concerned about cruelty to animals should be actively involved and assist us in our efforts."

With your help we were able to get this circus into the newspapers, as might not have happened without the press release and 'demo.'

Thanks to the tiny 'extended army' this effort was a success.  (and inadvertent perfect timing after the tiger incident). Never doubt the value and necessity of 'getting the message out.'  The animals have a desperate situation; it's the least we can do.

Best,

Kiley
