Stop Laboratory Testing on Animals

 Animal testing is unnecessary

Published in THE JOURNAL NEWS, 5/7:

(Original publication: May 7, 2005)

Animal Defenders of Westchester wishes to thank the public and the press for speaking with us during the rainy March of Dimes walkathon.

We would like to add the following information:

The MOD claim that "all medical breakthroughs" have been accomplished via animal testing is flawed: Not only have advancements been made without such testing, animal testing actually delays breakthroughs, by duplicating the same test over and over on one species, then again and again on at least five other species of nonhuman animals.

Furthermore, this lengthy process didn't prevent the recent serious problems that occurred with Vioxx, Bextra, acetaminophen, several of the statins, and others.

CNN and other news sources recently reported that researchers are attempting to create animals possessing a "mix" of human and animal genes, proof of the unreliability of animal testing; but what sort of bizarre etiological soup will these attempts result in? And the MOD statement that animal testing is "required" by federal law is untrue - these tests are not mandated. What's more, with technology exploding through the roof, why are we still relying on killing a monkey for such testing? Could they merely be the least expensive alternative?

Finally, MOD cites testing done on mice; but they also test on cats and dogs. I saw many loving dog-walkers in the walkathon - what if it were your dog?
