Published in the Westchester Weekly, 1/18/01, titled
VEGETARIANS UBER ALLUS (their title):
*Note: the Westchester Weekly was a progressive,
counter-culture, pro-under dog publication):
Thank you for printing my letter ("The horror on your
plate," 12/7) concerning Philip Innes' food column (WORD OF MOUTH) However,
I really meant his excesses have NO PLACE in your paper. Think about it -
you don't run a regular column by a KKK member, or Anita Bryant, or even
Jeanine Pirro. There is a reason you don't, and I request the animals be
treated in kind.
Look, obviously I would prefer the whole world be
vegetarian. I accept that it is not. It is, however, an ethical issue with
your food critic. Indeed, when he finally referes to a vegetarian
restaurant, he calls it an 'oddity.' It is not; there are places like it all
over New York City. He didn't even have the decency to review it, which is a
major faux pas.
The Weekly has done incredible pieces on animal
rights-related issues. I ask that you show the same consideration to animals
raised for food; they are innocent victims as well.
