Send in the Clowns

How distressing that the usually fair Newsday did a glowing article on the Clyde Beatty circus ("Join the Circus in Woodhaven," July 22) without once covering our protest rallies.

I came from Yonkers to the circus' Brooklyn appearance on my day off because not only did Clyde Beatty amass a record 45 violations in a three-month period, but it recently was forced to retire a poor, arthritic elephant who inexplicably died one month after retirement. This is the fourth circus elephant in three years to die under questionable circumstances.
