Letters Petting zoo cruel to Animals letter published in THE JOURNAL NEWS, June 26, 2003: *Note: Stop & Shop cancelled this event after our protests and letters.
The recent visit of a traveling "petting zoo" (June 14), which included
elephant rides, at Stop & Shop in Yonkers, has angered and disappointed a
number of Westchester residents, several of whom came to the event to
protest. Judging from the reactions of many of the passersby, the protesters
had a lot of support. When are we going to stop treating animals as objects for our amusement?
These poor creatures are dragged in cages from one shopping center to
another, where they spend hours being poked and prodded, and never know
freedom or enjoy a natural habitat. It is disgusting that establishments like Stop & Shop still sponsor this
sort of outdated and cruel 'entertainment,' and it needs to stop. I hope
more Westchester residents are willing to boycott petting zoos and circuses
whenever they come to town. Allison Solin Valhalla
