Pet protection
Published in NY Newsday, 12/27/04: It is appalling that pet shops aren't required to have working sprinkler
systems ["Blaze destroys pet store," News, Dec. 19]. How much the hundreds
of innocent little creatures in that store must have suffered is beyond
comprehension. It is shameful that this business didn't see fit to provide a minimum of
safety measures for the helpless living beings in its care. Though animals are still considered "property," the law is changing; and
the time will come when sentient beings will not longer be considered
disposable or "merchandise." In the meantime, the City Council has introduced a bill to require the
installation of fire sprinklers in pet stores and other facilities that
shelter animals for more than 24 hours. This bill must pass, in order that
this unspeakable tragedy never happens again. Kiley Blackman Yonkers Fair Use Notice: This document may contain
