Humane Society Files Suit to Stop Foie Gras Expansion
(Albany, N.Y.) AP -- The Humane Society is suing to block New York state
from subsidizing foie gras production.
The suit, filed in state Supreme Court in Albany Thursday, claims the state
shouldn't use $420,000 of taxpayer money to underwrite the expansion of
Hudson Valley Foie Gras.
The suit contends the grant is illegal because it is aimed at helping the company bring be environmentally compliant. The group claims the states
Empire Development Corporation isn't authorized to consider the cost of
compliance with environmental laws in issuing grants.
Foie gras, which involves force-feeding to fatten birds' livers, has been the subject of increasing controversy.
