Urge NFL to Do More: Suspend Vick Without Pay
Update: After receiving tens of thousands of emails from compassionate people who were outraged over the horrific allegations of Michael Vick's involvement in dogfighting rings, Nike has suspended Michael Vick's contract without pay pending the outcome of the trial! Reebok and the NFL have also pulled Vick-related items. Thank you to everyone who took action on this issue! If you haven't already, please take a moment now to urge the NFL to suspend Michael Vick by going to the web site lised below.
In the wake of NFL star Michael Vick's indictment by a federal grand jury on felony dogfighting charges, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has told Vick not to come to training camp while he investigates whether Vick has violated the NFL's personal conduct policy. Vick is charged with violating federal laws against competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and conducting the enterprise across state lines.
Humane officers and other law enforcement officials routinely break up illegal dogfighting rings and confiscate dogfighting paraphernalia, including "rape racks," treadmills used to build the dogs' endurance, and drugs used "jazz up" the dogs. According to Vick's indictment, even if the losing dogs survived, they met a cruel fate, "sometimes put to death by drowning, strangulation, hanging, gun shot, electrocution, or some other method."
The professional sports world is plagued with players who have been accused, charged, or convicted of cruelty to animals, abusing pit bulls, and dogfighting, and we hope that this indictment sends a loud and clear message to players and the NFL that celebrity is not a sufficient excuse for breaking the law and that animal abuse should never be tolerated under any circumstances.
The NFL has taken a step in the right direction, but we need your help today to urge the league to treat the allegations against Vick with the seriousness that they deserve and suspend him without pay immediately.
