K-9's
Richton Park, IL
Remembering Wanko
Born November 20, 1991
At Rest May 20, 2000
The Richton Park, IL police lost one of their K-9s last year. When we hear so much about how police are too eager to shoot strays or troublesome dogs, the RPPD is to be commended for the affection they showed for their fallen comrade -- Wanko. They held a funeral and attended in full police dress. The following was written on a mass card with Wanko's picture on one side. I had known about the funeral but did not know about the little card until now. It is very touching.
The K-9s Oath
My eyes are your eyes
to watch and protect yours
My ears are your ears to hear
and detect evil minds in the dark
My nose is your nose
to scent the invader of your domain
and so you may live
My life is yours, also
