The Republicans New Leader, No Friend For Cat Lovers
Associated Press
WASHINGTON (Dec. 21) - It took Republicans little time to anoint Bill Frist as Senate majority leader after Trent Lott's historic resignation over his apparent nostalgia for segregation, and not long for critics to launch a scrutiny of Frist's own history.
The Humane Society of the US raised Frist's shamefaced confession in a 1989 book to adopting cats as a medical student, and then experimenting on them. Frist's extensive history of advocating unregulated student experimentation on cats was first explained away by Frist, "These were cats paid for, many from breeders, and they are the lowest on the animal chain''.
Trying to quiet the growing protests on his cat experimentation stand in 1998, Frist stated, "Cats may have some value beyond experimentation and I can now see they may feel some limited degree of pain which could be considered cruel." We hope that the drive behind that pattern of behavior has been fully purged,'' said Wayne Pacelle, the Humane Society's senior vice president.
