Stubby
Life has been a rocky road for little black and white Stubby, one of 20
unaltered feral cats in Kinderhook that were left in a difficult situation when
their elderly caretakers departed. Animalkind stepped in to trap, neuter and
find homes for all the ferals.
Four of them, including Stubby and his mother Bella, came to my feral cat
barn colony in late March. Stubby went missing in early June and reappeared
weeks later with a broken, withered leg. He was quickly trapped and taken to the
vet, who recommended 4 weeks of close confinement; no running, no jumping. Poor
Stubby could not use the leg at all, and amputation was a possible outcome.
But as Dr. Tucker said, "Cat bones heal amazingly well." Confined to a large dog crate, Stubby experienced domestic life for the first time. He went from lashing out and spitting to a curious, playful teenager. Now he has the run of the house and his best friend is gray Stripes (pictured) another former feral from Animalkind. His leg is just fine.
