What We Do Every Day
Little Kitten with Birth Defects Taken in by Animalkind - 19 Oct 2009
Little Olivia came to Animalkind emaciated and sick. She was born with two deformed legs and could not make it to any food sources. We immediately provided medical attention and LOTS of love for her. She is now in a foster home waiting to grow and for her legs to be straightened.
Working with our vet, we created a means of straightening her little legs and also a buffer zone for her chest. This is the first time this baby actually sat up!
That night she managed 12 inches (!) of steps, while "walking" upright. It is the first stage in recovery - but Olivia is a fighter and eventually will make someone the purrfect loving pet.
Now, Olivia is in a foster home, and by way of her foster mom, sent the following message to Animalkind:
Dear Aunt Katrin,
As Executive Director of Animalkind, I think you should know that Aunt Denise has put me in a sweater and stuffed the front of it with gauze pads.
The good part is that it is easier to keep my head up and and I am not always breathing into a pillow. Also I am slightly more mobile but, so far, I have only found reverse gear.
The problem is that I think I am too young to be stuffing my sweaters and trying to have a bust line. My brother, Ashton, is outraged and says he doesn't want to be bothered with a bunch of boy kitties following me around.
Love, Little Olivia

Animalkind Inc.is a not-for-profit welfare, protection, rescue, rights organization dedicated to the compassionate care and humane population control of abandoned, feral and stray cats in Hudson, New York (Columbia County) and the surrounding area. We promote non-lethal prevention of an unwanted litter or litters of kittens through trap, spay, neuter, release (return), (tnr, TNR). An altered cat or kitten is released into a managed colony. Felines living in such colonies are assured kind daily care. Adoption to homes providing love and care for cats and kittens is encouraged. We also provide low or no cost spaying and neutering assistance to low income pet owners and help increase public awareness and education through the media, special events, and publications to promote compassion, respect, and kindness towards all animals.
