Four [including monk) cited for illegal night hunting in Vina, CA

CONTACT the Abbey of New Clairvaux and urge them to refuse to allow hunting on their grounds, and to remove Brother Pierre Lapointe from their Abbey and to release him from his duties. He clearly has violated the most basic tenet of Jesus: compassion. Their grounds should be a sanctuary for victimized deer, not for their savage killers.

VINA - Four people were cited in connection with illegal night hunting on the grounds of the New Clairvaux Abby in Vina [CA], according to the Department of Fish and Game.

Citations were issued to Brother Pierre Lapointe, 76, of the New Clairvaux Abby, Robert Stack, 51, of Aloha, Ore.; and Timothy Stack, 52, of Ely, Nev.; and Joel Stack, 22, Reno, Nev. , according to a press release issued this week by Scott F. Willems, DFG Patrol Lieutenant Supervisor for Shasta and Tehama counties.

The DFG conducted a night surveillance for illegal night hunting activity using vehicles and lights on Nov. 23.

Warden Pilot Jeff Veal observed a light being used to illuminate fields and orchards in the Vina area. Ground units were called in and the activity was tracked to the New Clairvaux Abbey. A vehicle was observed on the monastery property using a spotlight, and rifle shots were heard coming from the vicinity of the vehicle, the DFG press release said.

The gates to the monastery were closed and locked, so the wardens approached on foot. The suspect vehicle had returned to the monastery warehouse where contact was made with four individuals.

Two does and one spike buck deer that were shot were found in the warehouse. There was deer hair and blood in the bed of the pickup as well as on the clothing of the suspects, according to the DFG press release.

Deer season was closed, and it is illegal to hunt deer at night and to use lights. Doe and spike deer are also illegal to hunt except under some very restricted situations. A fourth deer (another spike) was located in the field the following morning where it had been left. The suspects admitted to shooting at least seven deer, but no more were located.

The four deer along with two rifles and a Q-beam spotlight were seized as evidence. The suspects were issued citations by Warden Jeremy Bonesio for unlawful take and possession of deer (Fish and Game Code Sections 2000 and 2001) and illegal use of a spotlight to take deer at night (FGC Section 2005).
