The aim of the project is to develop “hydroponic meat” as an alternative to animal flesh for human consumption. Similar in concept to soil-free hydroponic vegetable cultivation, hydroponic meat is grown without the body of an animal. Currently, there are no active hydroponic meat research programs funded in the United States. It is my ambition to innovate hydroponic meat technologies during my postdoctoral tenure under the guidance of mentors with applicable tissue engineering expertise.
The Problem Being Addressed
Humanity’s dependence on animals for meat has come at a devastating cost. Globally, livestock production occupies 30% of Earth's total land surface area and is the primary cause of deforestation and habitat destruction. Livestock industries directly contribute to 18% of greenhouse gas emissions and share in the ethical burden of annually slaughtering over 54 billion animals worldwide. Zoonotic diseases emerging from animal farms (e.g. avian flu, BSE) are a continuous threat to our existence.
The Possible Impact
Since livestock domestication during the Neolithic period, there have been advances in animal husbandry; however the basic paradigm has remained unchanged. Consumption of meat has always required rearing and slaughter of animals. Humanity is now faced with immense challenges, including climate change and the increasing demands of a growing population in a milieu of dwindling natural resources. Hydroponic meat is a broad and realistic solution to the most ubiquitous and fundamental issues today.
I can find inspiration everywhere. Once, as I was traveling on a jet, I looked down at the land below. I noticed farmland spanning to the horizon and then realized the vast majority of this land is used to feed livestock destined for slaughter. Despite the objective consequences of meat consumption, the majority of our species is unwilling to relinquish its carnivorous addiction. As an equivalent commodity, hydroponic meat is the key to sparing the ecosystem whilst satiating our palates
