Each year, Japanese fishermen eradicate about 23,000 dolphins and other small whales in the most brutal way imaginable. Operating with a permit from their government, they carry out the largest massacre of cetaceans anywhere in the world. Some of the meat is sold to the public, in spite of the fact that it is contaminated with mercury, methyl-mercury and PCBs.

On Japan Dolphin Day 2008, 46 groups around the world in over 20 cities will be protesting as many international Japanese embassies and consulate offices as possible. We are requesting the Japanese Minister of Health to put a warning label on all dolphin meat, similar to the warning label that has been placed on every package of cigarettes sold in Japan. If the warning label system is implemented, it should have a major impact on the demand for dolphin meat. A warning label may save the dolphins, and it may save the people who eat them.

This international protest will set the stage for the ongoing work inside Japan in September. We will keep the pressure on until the annual dolphin slaughter is finally abolished.

What you can do

1. Demonstrate

On September 3, 2008 (and every September until the dolphin slaughter end)  there will be protests at the San Francisco Japanese Consulate, Los Angeles Japanese Consulate and the Japanese Embassy in Washington DC. Please join us in a global day of demonstrations against the Japanese annual slaughter of over 20,000 dolphins. Please contact Melissa Gonzalez, In Defense of Animals, at melissa@idausa.org  or (707) 981-7701 or Mark Berman, Earth Island Insitute, berman@earthisland.org  or (415) 788-3666 x139.

2. Write to Embassy of Japan in Washington D.C.,  Ambassador Ryozo Kato, 2520 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington D.C. 20008, fax 202-328-2187, jicc@embjapan.org.

3. Send a letter to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) (Executive Director, Gerald Dick, gerald-dick@waza.org, urging them to enforce their Code of Ethics and expel the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA) from their organization, and ask them to expel all other facilities that have purchased dolphins from the dolphin drive hunts.
