Our public lands are a national treasure that has been neglected far too long. Inadequate funding levels for the land management agencies have forced visitor center closures, staff layoffs, and operations shortfalls that have severely hampered the ability to provide even minimal services. Lost are countless recreational and educational opportunities on our public lands.

The Congress now has a chance to turn that around, by passing, without weakening amendments, the FY2009 Interior Appropriations bill.

This bill contains increased:

- Operational funding for National Parks, Wildlife Refuges, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service;

- Funding for wildfire suppression which will help alleviate the funding constraints for non-fire programs; and

- Appropriations for the National Global Warming and Wildlife Science Center to assist the survival of wildlife and ecosystems in the face of global warming.

The bill also contains language allowing the Department of the Interior to roll back regulations put forward by the previous administration that undermine the Endangered Species Act and protections for the polar bear.

Bi-partisan negotiations have created an FY09 appropriations bill that provides for a wise investment in our public lands. I urge you to pass this bill and oppose any amendments that would weaken the Endangered Species Act or other bedrock laws that are fundamental to environmental protection.

Thank you for everything you do for animals!
