On its website, Clinique, a company that produces high-end cosmetics and perfumes, states that it does not test its products on animals or ask others to test on its behalf. With the countless number of animals used in toxicity testing today, this is a welcome endeavor. However, Clinique has still not opened its animal testing policy to scrutiny by signing on to the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics’ (CCIC) Leaping Bunny Program.
Every year, animals such as rabbits, mice, and guinea pigs are used to test the safety and efficacy of new products and their ingredients. Not only is this process cruel, it is also unnecessary. As evidenced by the over 200 companies listed in AAVS’s Compassionate Shopping Guide, many great products can be made without the use of animals.
Certification by the Leaping Bunny Program provides consumers with the best assurance that a company is producing truly cruelty-free products. Companies that join the Leaping Bunny Program pledge not to test on animals during any stage of product development. This means all ingredients, formulations, and finished products are not tested on animals after an unchangeable date, guaranteeing the product to be 100% free of new animal testing. In addition, Leaping Bunny is the only program of its kind that asks companies to be open to independent audits.
Some companies choose not to join the Leaping Bunny Program because they continue to conduct or commission animal testing for their ingredients or formulations, or they wish to reserve the right to test on animals in the future. Other companies simply may not realize the importance of joining the program to demonstrate their commitment against the use of animals in product testing.
Until a company signs a CCIC committment against animal testing, consumers cannot be sure of its policy on the use of animals. As the Chair of the CCIC, AAVS urges concerned consumers to contact Clinique and ask the company to join the Leaping Bunny Program.
Thank you for everything you do for animals!
