The Problem with Primates

U.S. law currently bars import, export, and trade between states of big cats — including lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, and cougars — if they are to be kept as pets. The danger of keeping primates as pets is just as real, and a woman in one state, Connecticut, was recently mauled to the point of near death by a neighbor’s chimpanzee.

The Captive Primate Safety Act would add primates to the list of potentially dangerous exotic animals that could not be traded as pets.

When in the hands of private individuals, primates may suffer. These animals require special care, housing, diet, and maintenance that the average person cannot provide. Individuals who possess these animals often attempt to change the nature of the animal rather than the nature of the care provided. Many of these animals are euthanized, abandoned, or doomed to live in deplorable conditions.

Born Free USA wants to end the keeping of primates as “pets”! Send the letter below to tell both of your U.S. Senators that they should join this effort immediately.

Wild Cats and Dogs on the Brink

African lions. Ethiopian wolves. Across the globe, especially in Africa, wild felid and canid species are in great peril. They face loss of habitat and natural prey, disease, and persecution by humans including trophy hunting.

Ethiopian Wolf

The Great Cats and Rare Canids Act would establish a fund that could have as much as $5 million to contribute to conservation projects in the field to protect 15 different wild cat and dog species. African lions, for instance, are disappearing across the continent at an alarming rate, with significant losses coming at the hands of foreign trophy hunters. Only 500 Ethiopian Wolves cling to life in the mountains of Ethiopia.

Born Free USA wants Congress to act immediately to save lions, Ethiopian wolves, cheetahs, and other cat and dog species before it’s too late! Send the letter below to ask both of your U.S. Senators to join this effort as well.

Thank you for everything you do for animals!
