Tell Bartlett Arboretum to NOT encourage deer slaughter merely to appease hunters.

The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens located at 151 Brookdale Road, Stamford CT has organized a deer slaughter to take place on the grounds that are home to these animals. This shameful killing will take place on unannounced days and the hunters must leave the grounds with the bodies of the victims before the Arboretum opens at 9 a.m., which is 30 minutes later than its normal opening time. This would be to give the hunters more time to clean up so that the public won’t see any of their bloody evidence, nor will they see them drag the mortally wounded deer off the grounds. Although, with bow hunting, the chances of a clean kill are less than 50% so perhaps neighbors might find the deer injured or see them running wounded through their property.
The Arboretum claims that the understory has been “devastated” by the deer. Friends of Animals challenges this and other statements that promote the myth that deer are to blame for these changes in the ecosystem. Deforestation is a serious issue and we should be taking it seriously by addressing its key causes, not killing off deer who are part of nature.
This scheme is part of the CT Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) push to increase hunting in the state since the numbers are in decline. Hunters number about 38,000 while wildlife watchers number 1,170,000. The more hunting licenses sold the more money for the DEP, which also gets money from the federal government when ammunition and supplies are bought by hunters. Simply put, some DEP employees salaries depend on hunters’ folly.
Please contact the Bartlett Arboretum and let them know that this ghastly plan to kill deer will not solve its perceived problems. If you are a member of the Arboretum, please use this opportunity to suspend membership until such time that the Arboretum puts a stop to the senseless slaughter.
Thank you for everything you do for animals!
