This Bill was approved by the House of Representatives last July. It's time for the Senate to move forward on this legislation. Act (H.R. 80), which would ban interstate trade in primates for
the exotic pet trade. The House of Representatives has passed
this bill by a wide margin, in part because of the recent
vicious attack by a chimpanzee living in a private home in
Connecticut. Primates pose serious health risks to humans because many carry deadly diseases. At the same time, they deserve to live in conditions which meet their needs, not to spend their lives caged in someone's basement. Though an infant primate appears cuddly and controllable, even a small adult monkey can seriously injure or kill a full-grown human. Primates belong in the wild, not in interstate commerce.
