INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS
Paramount Pictures has partnered with PetSmart to offer moviegoers a $10 discount on any reptile at PetSmart if they present a ticket stub from Rango, a film primarily marketed to children. This promotion flies in the face of the message of the movie—an animated feature about a chameleon who is freed from a boring life in a terrarium in captivity and winds up on an identity quest cleaning up a corrupt town in the Mojave Desert—and could be a death sentence for these small, delicate animals if they are purchased on impulse.
A recent PETA undercover investigation of one of the largest exotic-animal suppliers in the world, U.S. Global Exotics (USGE ), uncovered severe cruelty; USGE was shut down as a result. More information on this investigation can be found here: http://features.peta.org/pettrade/default.asp.
An estimated 90 percent of all wild-caught reptiles die within the first year of captivity. Often kept in small tanks and unsuitable temperatures, fed improper diets, injured when handled roughly or dropped, and forgotten when the novelty wears off, reptiles are among the most unfortunate animals in the pet trade. It might be easy for moviegoers to purchase these animals impulsively as "pets," but very few people have the knowledge (or equipment) required to meet the animals' specialized needs or the inclination to commit to many years of care.
Thank you for everything you do for animals!
