Michael Bromwich INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS The Arctic Ocean is a special and important place for wildlife and Alaska Natives and one that should not be put at risk by oil and gas drilling. Currently no company can successfully cleanup a major oil spill in the Arctic Ocean and there is insufficient scientific information on marine and potentially-affected coastal resources to identify which ecologically-important offshore areas should be off-limits to drilling. Additionally, many steps still are needed to reform the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE), formerly the Minerals Management Service, to ensure that it is an effective overseer of offshore operations. For these reasons, I urge BOEMRE not to hold Arctic Ocean lease sales during the 2012-2017 timeframe. BOEMRE should not include Chukchi and Beaufort lease sales in the Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for the 2012-2017 Five-Year Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program.
