ACTION

Tell Chile’s President to overturn the approval of HidroAysén’s hydroelectric project and save Patagonia. The full effects of the dams on Patagonia's ecosystems, flora and fauna, and local communities would be enormous and irreparable.

INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS

Overturn the environmental approval recently granted for HidroAysén's five mega-dams, and protect Chile's Patagonia from this destructive project.

The full environmental impacts of the dams are still not known. The company's environmental impact assessment was incomplete. It used incorrect data, only half addressed some issues, and ignored many others. The full effects of the dams on Patagonia's ecosystems, flora and fauna, and local communities would be enormous and irreparable.

Chile's Patagonia is a national treasure of immeasurable ecological value. Its pristine, unique qualities also make it a place of true global importance that deserves the highest level of protection. HidroAysén's dams and 1,100 mile-long transmission line would destroy the region's remarkable wilderness and open the door for other development projects. This would threaten not only the area's wildlife but also the tourism, livestock and fishery sectors on which local communities depend.

The HidroAysén dams are not necessary for Chile's energy security. A recent study by energy experts found that by 2025 renewables and efficiency can generate more energy than three HidroAyséns. If Chile focuses on developing its remarkable natural resources for solar, geothermal, wind and biomass, it can become a world leader in these technologies. When coupled with energy efficiency, these renewable energy sources can meet Chile's energy needs and create a more sustainable, economic and secure energy future.

Like 61 percent of Chileans, I believe that large hydro development in Patagonia -- like HidroAysén -- is not the best energy option for Chile.

Please overturn HidroAysén's approval and put Chile on the right path towards the best energy future possible.
