ACTION

Tell your Senators and Representative to sponsor S.1717, the Prevention of Escapement of Genetically Altered Salmon in the United States (PEGASUS) Act. The PEGASUS Act would prohibit the transportation, sale, purchase, or possession of genetically-engineered (GE) fish in interstate and foreign commerce.

GE salmon have been engineered to contain genes from other species to grow twice as fast as those in the wild. To make matters worse, the GE salmon will also be raised on factory farms, where crowded, unsanitary conditions have been documented to cause numerous health problems. They frequently suffer from skeletal deformities, jaw erosions, inflammation, lesions, increased susceptibility to disease, and increased mortality.

INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS

Recent reports indicate that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in the final stages of approving AquaBounty’s genetically engineered (GE) salmon for food, despite the fact that these fish often suffer serious health problems. In an outrageous move, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) just gave $500,000 of tax-payer money to AquaBounty to develop its GE fish.

It’s time for Congress to put an end to this madness, but we need your help!

The GE salmon have been engineered by AquaBounty to contain genes from other fish species and supposedly grow twice as fast as their wild counterparts. The company’s own data reveal that, as a result of these manipulations, GE salmon are typically unhealthy and frequently suffer from skeletal deformities, jaw erosions, inflammation, lesions, increased susceptibility to disease, and increased mortality. This raises serious concerns about animal health and welfare, food safety, and environmental risks if the fish escape.

To make matters worse, the GE salmon will also be raised on factory farms, where crowded, unsanitary conditions have been documented to cause numerous health problems. “Screamer disease,” for example, causes facial disfigurements that lock the jaws in an open position, making the fish look like they are screaming, and deadly sea lice infestations run rampant.

We can help prevent animal suffering and protect the environment.

Ask your Senators and Representatives to support S.1717, the Prevention of Escapement of Genetically Altered Salmon in the United States (PEGASUS) Act. The PEGASUS Act would ban the transportation, sale, purchase, or possession of GE fish in interstate or foreign commerce, effectively making it impossible to sell GE fish in the U.S.

Congress needs to hear that you do not want GE salmon! Thanks to your letters, a bill that would have prevented the FDA from approving the GE salmon gained a lot of support, but it unfortunately was not able to come up for a vote due to procedural reasons. However, passage of the PEGASUS Act would dramatically limit the ability to sell GE fish in the U.S. and would help reduce environmental risks.

Members of Congress need to hear that you want the Pegasus Act (S.1717) passed. Please contact your Senators and Representatives today and ask them to support this bill if they have not done so already, or thank them if they already have.

At the very least, they should sign on to the bills requiring GE fish to be labeled, S.229/H.R.520, so that consumers are not duped into buying GE fish they do not want.

Thank you for everything you do for animals!
