INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS
The slaughter of seals is an unconscionable crime against defenseless baby animals. It is Canada's shame.
It has not been an important part of the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador or Atlantic Canada for many years. Now, it is subsidized 100% by Newfoundland taxpayers.
It is now a waste of life and a waste of money. Enough is enough.
Canada's seal slaughter has ended, with over 69,175 seal pups dead...for nothing.
In the past, the Canadian government went to great lengths to portray this as a 'market based hunt', with no federal subsidies. This was never true as the government provided ice breaker Coast Guard ships to the sealers, sent official delegations to China to develop markets for seal products and to Europe to fight the ban on seal product imports, and sponsored 'research' on uses for seal products.
Now, it's different though. Now there is no way to claim that there is any market basis for this slaughter. This year, the killing was 100% paid for by public funds. The Newfoundland provincial government took CAN $3.6 million and gave it to Carino (as a 'loan') to purchase pelts from sealer and then stockpile them.
How long could this go on? How many years could people who have nothing to gain from the seal slaughter allow their politicians to spend their money this way? We don't know, but one thing we do know is that we have an opportunity to end this slaughter once and for all through legislation in the Canadian Senate.
You can end this madness and make your mark in Canada's history as a sane, sensible, compassionate individual who helped end what will someday be seen all over Canada, including in Newfoundland and Labrador, as an embarrassment and an example of just how cruel, stubborn, and irrational humans can be.
Thank you for everything you do for animals!
