INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS

Cabo Pulmo coral Calderon

Mexican President Felipe Calderón has rejected plans to build a massive tourism resort complex called Cabo Cortés, which could have devastated the marine paradise of Cabo Pulmo, its coral reef and the local community. Please thank President Calderón for halting the Cabo Cortés project and allowing local residents to play a leading role in their community’s sustainable growth.

I applaud your decision to reject the mega-tourism project Cabo Cortés. Thanks to the efforts of your government and the local community, Cabo Pulmo has been a shining example to the world of ocean conservation and sustainable ecotourism for 15 years. Your rejection of Cabo Cortés makes Mexico a leader in defining green growth that is based on conservation and environmental stewardship.

Cabo Pulmo is the "most robust marine reserve in the world," hosting the greatest abundance of reef fish and corals in the entire Gulf of California. It serves as a source of tourism income for the local community and acts as a nursery to boost fish populations in adjacent areas, improving the livelihoods of local artisanal fishing communities throughout the region. The Cabo Cortés project threatened to destroy this amazing coral reef system and its marine life. Because of your leadership, Cabo Pulmo is now protected from this most recent threat.

Now, the region needs a plan which ensures that communities do not have to repeatedly rescue this valuable resource, a plan that takes advantage of the natural riches of Baja California's marine ecosystems.

Thank you for rejecting the Cabo Cortés mega-resort development proposal and maintaining Mexico's commitment to protecting Cabo Pulmo as a national and global treasure. I urge you to work with the region's residents to ensure that this globally important marine paradise will be permanently protected from massive development projects like Cabo Cortés.
