INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has welcomed the news that Iceland has called an end to the cruel practice of harpooning endangered fin whales.
Fin whales are second only to the blue whale in length and are one of the fastest whales alive today.
While the suspension is only for this season, NHES has appealed to the ambassador from Iceland to make the suspension permanent and has asked that other whales, including minke whales, be included in the request.
With the market for whale meat shrinking, it’s time to halt the cruel practice of killing them. If a nation such as Iceland wants to preserve part of its culture, then it should invest in whale watching, not whale slaughter. This would make more economic sense and certainly would show the rest of the world that Iceland is being a responsible steward of the oceans.
Thank you for everything you do for animals!
