Forgiveness Without Sacrifice – Part 10

Lamb of God

Lamb of God

In John 8:2-11, we are told another account of how Jesus taught us, and the people in the Temple, that people can be forgiven of their sins without the sacrifice of any animal or the shedding of any blood.

2. And early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them.

3. And the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

4. they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act.

We find this very interesting, because if this woman was caught in the very act of adultery, the man was also with her; and these religious leaders didn’t bring the man into the temple, for they both deserve the same penalty, which shows the partiality of these so-called religious people.

5. “Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?”

6. And they were saying this, testing Him, in order that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down, and with His finger wrote on the ground.

7. But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

8. And again He stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

Whatever Jesus wrote must have been very convicting to those religious leaders.

9. And when they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst.

10. And straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?”

11. And she said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go your way. From now on sin no more.”

NASB

Not only did Jesus forgive this woman’s sins without sacrifice, He also ended the practice of capital punishment, and showed that our heavenly Father is really a God of mercy and grace for all who have a truly repentant heart.
