Good in the World

Yesterday we talked about the origin of “evil” in the Bible, so today we thought we should have a more positive outlook and seek out the origin of “good” in the world.

As an example, in Genesis 1:4, on the first day of creation we are told:

4. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.

God called the light good, just as He called everything else He had created and made “good” on each of the six days of creation. The water is good. The plants and their seeds and fruit are good. All the expanse of heaven is good. All of the sea animals and birds are good. All of the other animals are good.

Then after He has created all of this, including human beings, we are told in Genesis 1:29-31:

29. Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;

30. and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food “; and it was so.

31. And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

One of the main reasons that God seems to say that everything He made was really very good is that He gave all living beings (living souls, Hebrew: neh-fesh khah-yawh) only plant foods to eat which insured that in God’s perfect creation there would be no pain, suffering, or death.

Behold, everything that God made was VERY GOOD!
