Institutionalized Animal Cruelty – Lab: Univ of Northern Colorado – 20120724

Lamb of God

Lamb of God

On 24 July 2012, the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) inspected the animal laboratories at the Univ of Northern Colorado, Greeley, CO, and cited them for failure to provide adequate food and water to a bat colony resulting in the death of more than one half of the colony. (We believe there is a typo in the paragraph below concerning the dates.) The report stated:

“On 10/26/2012 and 10/27/2012, no daily observation or husbandry was provided for a colony of research bats. The research staff that provides the daily care for these animals was attending a conference out of State. The trained interim care person scheduled to provide care during their absence did not report to the facility to provide care on these 2 days and did not notify anyone at the Animal Research Facility (ARF) that she would not be coming in to provide care. When the interim care person arrived on 10/28/2012, she found 10 bats dead but did not report this to the ARF staff nor to the Attending Veterinarian (AV). Numerous animals (45 out of a total of 86 bats) became ill and either died or required euthanasia due to lack of adequate food and water during this time.”

And even though the report states that the Univ of Northern Colorado took steps to prevent this horrible lack of concern for the welfare of the bats from happening again, on the day of the inspection, 24 Jun 2012, another bat was found dead and two more had to be euthanized because of the collapse of a perching structure.

To us, this shows a serious lack of empathy for the animals in their care on the part of the employees and management.

When Paul wrote in Galatians 5:22-23…

22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23. gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (NASB)

…he couldn’t have been talking about these people, for their deeds seem to reflect the desires of the flesh.  He warns that such people shall have no part in the kingdom of God.

We need to speak out against all forms of institutionalized animal cruelty, and expose the truth about what is happening at facilities like the Univ of Northern Colorado.
