People promote lies about eating animals because it’s big business, and/or they go along with the corrupt ways of this world.

People hide the truth about the horrible suffering of animals on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, and in laboratories; these people promote lies, because a hidden truth is really a lie.

People, including most doctors, hide the truth about the fact that a whole food vegan diet is the healthiest way to live; these people promote lies, too.

The medical and pharmaceutical industries know that switching to a whole plant food diet will reverse or cure most chronic diseases, but promoting such a way of life would take money out of their pockets; and like the others, these people promote lies.

Psalm 62:1-12 is a psalm of David, but if we look beyond David, we can see the universal truths about God’s heavenly will for us and the whole of His creation.

1. My soul waits in silence for God only;
From Him is my salvation.

2. He only is my rock and my salvation,
My stronghold;
I shall not be greatly shaken.

This truth about God really applies to all of creation; note what we are told in John 3:16-17…

16. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

17. “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him.
NASB

God sent Jesus to save the whole world, and not just some human beings; He sent Jesus to save every human being if they are willing, and to save all the animals, and to save the environment in which we all live.

So when we see or hear that people promote lies about eating animals, we know they are promoting the ways of the devil, for he is the father of lies.

With this in mind, let’s return to our psalm lesson for today.

3. How long will you assail a man,
That you may murder him, all of you,
Like a leaning wall, like a tottering fence?

All the exploited animals in this world must feel this way, and address these thoughts to their exploiters, who like all the rest of us, God commanded to be compassionate caretakers.

4. They have counseled only to thrust him down from his high position;
They delight in falsehood;
They bless with their mouth,
But inwardly they curse. Selah.

These people promote lies about eating animals because they delight in falsehood, just like David felt about those trying to harm him.

God wants people to be loving, compassionate, and peacemaking children of God, who delight in His heavenly will, and who diligently work to help save creation from its present corruption, and to end their own contributing to the suffering in the world.

5. My soul, wait in silence for God only,
For my hope is from Him.

6. He only is my rock and my salvation,
My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.

God is my rock and salvation, and I do trust in Him, but I cannot keep silent about all the pain and suffering we see and hear about every day that is inflicted upon millions of our fellow human beings and billions of animals every day.

People promote lies because they don’t want to hear the truth, and they don’t want the truth exposed.

7. On God my salvation and my glory rest;
The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.

8. Trust in Him at all times, O people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah.

The unfortunate problem is that most don’t do this, and the only refuge they seek is the so-called comfort they receive from their acquaintances who also follow the worldly ways of the devil with all its pain, suffering, bloodshed, and death.

God is calling us all to end these worldly ways and repent, and become the peacemaking children of God.

There is no place for people promoting lies in the kingdom of heaven.

9. Men of low degree are only vanity, and men of rank are a lie;
In the balances they go up;
They are together lighter than breath.

David is speaking about the fact that most people promote lies, which is against the will of God.

10. Do not trust in oppression,
And do not vainly hope in robbery;
If riches increase, do not set your heart upon them.

Even though this was written about 3,000 years ago, it accurately describes the people who exploit animals, including those who profit from such endeavors, as we mentioned previously.

11. Once God has spoken;
Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God;

12. And lovingkindness is Thine, O Lord,
For Thou dost recompense a man according to his work.
NASB

When we don’t follow the heavenly will of God, we physically and spiritually pay for it with failing health and hardening of our heart and soul, which separates us from communion with the Holy Spirit.

In the process, such people make the evil people of this world wealthier and more powerful, which is the reason we have so much corruption in the world today.

The great city of Nineveh had people promote lies by the thousands, but in Jonah 3:1-10 we see the people come to repentance, from the king on down to the lowliest.

1. Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,

2. “Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.”

3. So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days’ walk.

4. Then Jonah began to go through the city one day’s walk; and he cried out and said, “Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”

Just like Jonah, we need to speak out about all the evil taking place in the world around us in the hope that at least some of the people would come to repentance and turn from their evil and worldly ways.

5. Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.

6. When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat on the ashes.

7. And he issued a proclamation and it said, “In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water.

8. “But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands.

9. “Who knows, God may turn and relent, and withdraw His burning anger so that we shall not perish?”

The problem with most people is that they don’t fully recognize or acknowledge that they are already suffering from their own evil acts.

A perfect example of this is all the chronic diseases that people get from eating animal products.

And unfortunately, the vast majority of these people don’t want to hear the truth.

Nevertheless, God is still waiting for the people to repent.

10. When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.
NASB

This salvation is still available to the people who truly want it on God’s terms.

On the other hand, calamity still awaits those who follow the ways of the world.

People promote lies because they don’t believe that God is serious, or they mistakenly think they can hide the truth from God.

In Mark 1:14-20, we are told about one of the main reasons that Jesus appeared on earth.

14. And after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,

15. and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

And even to this very day Jesus is saying the same thing, but relatively few people seem to believe.

And many continue to believe that Jesus will still save them without their repentance, which just isn’t so.

16. And as He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen.

17. And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”

I hope we all hear what Jesus is saying to Simon and Andrew.

Jesus is calling them away from being fish killers and offering them the opportunity to be “fishers of men”, or evangelists seeking to save as many people as possible from the corrupt ways of this world and turning them into true children of God.

So what do Simon and Andrew do?

18. And they immediately left the nets and followed Him.

They jumped at the chance to repent and be saved.

19. And going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets.

And what did James and John do?

20. And immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away to follow Him.
NASB

They also left the corrupt ways of this world and followed Jesus.

And the Lord is still calling…

We need to choose who we will follow, as we are told in 1 Corinthians 7:29-31.

29. But this I say, brethren, the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none;

30. and those who weep, as though they did not weep; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess;

31. and those who use the world, as though they did not make full use of it; for the form of this world is passing away.
NASB

Paul wrote this nearly 2,000 years ago, perhaps thinking that the Lord was going to return sooner, but in any event the time now is much closer to the time that this world will be passing away, and those who follow its ways will also pass away.

People promote lies because they don’t believe, or because they just don’t want to leave the corrupt ways of this world as did Andrew, Simon, James, and John.

People promote lies about eating animals, such as saying that God put them here for us to eat, or that animals don’t feel pain or want to live just as much as we do.

They promote these lies because they don’t want to leave the corrupt ways of this world.

We hope we choose to leave the corrupt ways of this world, and be as these disciples, and enter the kingdom of God.

Amen.
