Little Things, that run and quail,
And die, in silence and despair!
Little things, that fight and fail,
And fall, on sea and earth and air!
All trapped and frightened little things,
The mouse, the coney, hear our prayer!
As we forgive those done to us,
- the lamb, the linnet and the hare -
forgive us all our trespasses,
little creatures, everywhere!
James Stevens, 1926
A lizard ran out on a rock and looked up, listening
no doubt to the sounding of the spheres.
And what a dandy fellow! the right toss of a chin for you
and swirl of a tail!
If men were as much men as lizards are lizards
they’d be worth looking at.
If There’s No God
If there’s no God, we’ve said goodbye to Spring,
If there’s no God the birds have ceased to sing.
No tough green spears have pierced each frozen sod,
Or faces peeped from lairs - if there’s no God.
If there’s no God no babies have been born,
Fresh souls sent down to comfort those who mourn.
If there’s no God, no skittish horses prance,
And puppies never laugh or kittens dance.
There is no Winter, Summer, Spring or Fall,
If there’s no God, there’s nothing good at all.
Angie von Tobel
Byron’s dog, Boatswain
When Lord Byron’s favourite dog died, the poet had a marble monument erected to his memory, with this inscription:
Near this spot
Are deposited the remains of one
Who possessed beauty without vanity,
Strength without insolence,
Courage without ferocity,
And all the virtues of man without his vices.
This praise, which would be unmeaning
Flattery if inscribed over human ashes,
Is but a just tribute to the memory of
Boatswain, a dog,
Who was born at Newfoundland, May 1803,
And died at Newstead Abbey, Nov. 18, 1808.
