A POEM FOR CHRISTMAS

A LODGING IN THE STABLE

The watchdog barked to warn them all
The travellers had come.
The camel squeezed against the wall
To make a little room.

The cow put out her hairy hoof
To keep the door ajar.
The cocks and hens up in the roof
Clucked welcome from their spar.

The ducklings quacked. The pigeons cooed.
The tiny sparrows cheeped.
The tabby and her kittens mewed.
The rats and mice peep-peeped.

The donkey dusted with her nose
The little manger-bed.
Her foal on shaky legs arose
And bowed his shaggy head.

The travellers were cheered to find
The poor brute beasts were glad;
For at the inn with human kind
No room was to be had.
