Selections From The Ark Number 203 - Summer 2006

Alas for the veal calf

My mother warned me there’d be slats beneath my feet;
That my warm breath would never be as sweet
As it would be if I could dance beneath the sky.
What is sky?

My mother warned me that the bars would not be wide.
But if I dare to move, they chafe against my side;
And Oh how wearily the leaden hours pass.
What is grass?

My mother warned me it would be quite useless to take flight
When at last someone will come to lead me to the light
They really are very expert when they swiftly end a life.
What is life?
