Selections From The Ark Number 209 - Summer 2008

By Beda Herbert

Poem read at the memorial service for May Bocking, 1 April. This poem, by the late Beda Herbert, was first published in The Ark in 1968, and was prefaced by a quotation from Bishop Rutland:

ĎAll Creation has been redeemed in Christ ... As the crime of sin affects the whole Creation, so all creatures are to experience the blessings of the Redemptioní.

These also felt His coming: beast and bird
Surmised when living flesh folded the Word,
When He, the Lamb of God, all meekly lay
Huddled in manger hay.

These who had filled the land and seas and skies
In gentle happiness of Paradise
Shared manís swift shame, fell íneath the sombre pall
Of his rebellious Fall.

Then were they caged in cruelties, and life
Became a harsh conspiracy of strife,
And man, their master, tortured them in vain,
In blindness of their pain.

Yet shall they feel in ways not yet divined
By mankindís searching, overshadowed mind,
The triumph over death,
Loveís victory,
In Him Who set us free.
