UNFORGOTTEN SONG
by Antonia Gabriella

Long ago it sang, in an alley-way,
In a small box-cage behind wire bars –
A living skylark – through the long sad day,
And the song rose floating beyond the stars.

A small wild bird, with that craving to rise,
Wings with that aching to soar ... to soar,
To reach to the clouds, to the fair blue skies –
Wings that quivered, beating the sanded floor.

Over the roof-tops, the spires, the street,
On – with the music of vast rushing spheres,
Unconscious praise, stifled and incomplete,
Beyond the bounds of our time, days and years.

The feet of the centuries passing by
May tread on the dust of a long-dead bird:
The Creator of earth and sea and sky
Hath not forgotten the song that He heard.

When New Earth rises, all pure and shriven,
Will He call to the little lark He knew
To sing in the Fair Land, beneath high heaven,
Where the wild rose smiles in the morning dew? –

Where naught may disturb the harmony
Of the great Creator’s paradise sweet,
Through the aeons of glad eternity –
Earth still His footstool, how gentle His feet!

Antonia Gabriella, Ter. O.S.D.
