A wounded bird’s last words
by Harrison Peiris

  One pellet’s blow upon my body – and
My frail wings pulse no more . . . in idle play
You kill me, and the future I have planned
Decays in the red sunset of this day . . .
I have been happy as a drifting cloud,
From dawn I have been singing ’neath the sun.
Why do you take my life, why weave my shroud ?
These wings are broken now, my day is done ...

Up on a tree-branch is my little nest
Where three young nurslings are awaiting me,
They must now wither, not close to my breast –
Alone and motherless they now must be;
You kill me, aye, but ’neath the morrow’s sky
Another bird-flock will still bravely fly . . . .
