Or, Compassion Means Action

We live in a world where again and again
We see cruelty, misery and wrong;
And the animal kingdom subjected to pain
As the weak in the hands of the strong.
Though indifference and apathy is the response
Of the many who cannot be swayed,
We must take up the fight of our brothers in pain
So desperately needing our aid.

Oh! its no use seeing if you’ve got no feeling –
You must open the eyes of your heart!
And it is no use sighing, complaining or crying,
If you don’t mean to play your part.
For compassion means action, it isn’t a fraction
Of use if you just take flight.
If you know how to love, you must learn how to act,
And see that the wrong’s put right!
Though the poor sentimentalist turns up his eyes
And weeps buckets of crocodile tears,
And assures us that ‘nothing can ever be done’
We must show him we don’t share his fears!
For with right on our side, we shall win in the end,
And the heart of the world shall be turned,
And the poor, tortured, terrified animals find
The peace which they surely have earned!
