IíM A Ö

Iím a pig, not very big,
Being reared for the chop,
And then the abattoir will send me
To a butcherís shop.

A gentle lamb is what I am.
I canít do more than bleat.
Iíll be your food, or coat, or gloves,
Or insoles for your feet.

Iím a hen, in a tiny pen;
Indeed a dismal fate,
And after all my eggs are laid,
Iíll end up on a plate.

Iím a cow. Though safe for now,
It cannot be denied
That one day Iíll be slaughtered
For my flesh and for my hide.

Iím a farmer/butcher/slaughterman.
Thereís no room for regrets.
Iíd be out of business I
f I viewed the animals as pets.

Iím a butcherís customer.
I help the meat-trade thrive.
God sends us animals for food.
Weíve got to keep alive.

Does killing warp the minds
Of those who benefit from it,
And is a Ďpro-lifeí carnivore
In truth a hypocrite?

Anthony Hofler.
