A Cargo of Innocents

Again I hear the sound of thudding wheels
See large trucks passing heavy
With breathing cargo
Crying out in farm voice.

Alongside the trucks
Protestors crowd
Banners flying - voices shout:
Ban live exports

They cry out in anger against the pitiless
Administrators, caught defending
Their financial cause, in a wrong decision -
The target - helpless calves, to be tortured for their veal.

Animals far from their mothers’ womb
And pleasant pastureland, now crowded for a foreign port.
I hear again the shouts -
Ban live exports

As the lorries trundle in -
As the ships load up -
With their frightened cargoes.
Wake up! Wake up, Britannia!

The time has come to end this evil trade.
