MAN'S BEST FRIEND

What have we done to man’s best friend
In pursuit of fashion, whim and trend?
Petting, pampering, over-feeding,
Gene control, selective breeding,
Four hundred types from toy to hound
Some tall, some thin, some squat, some round.
The bulldog snorts with pushed-in snout,
The Italian greyhound's bones stick out;
The lumb’ring Saint Bernard's enormous and tall,
While the trembling chihuahua is startlingly small;
The setter, the spaniel, the spotted dalmation,
The bedlington, boxer, the two-tone alsation;
The griggon, the husky, the proud pyrenees,
The basset, the briard, the primped pekinese;
Then there's the kursaar, the mastiff and one that is mute,
The shitzu, the elkhound, the tough malamute.
The borzoi's long-legged and also long nosed,
The Rhodesian ridgeback’s spine is exposed;
The lion-cut poodle is scarcely a dog,
The squashed-nosed pug has a face like a frog.

When Stone Age dog wagged his tail at a man
Ten-thousand years of gene-meddling began,
Owners abiding by Kennel Club laws
Trim ears, dock tails, groom coats and clip claws
Wrinkled, stretched, altered, misshaped,
Mongrels are lucky to have somehow escaped.
If the crow could have purred or wagged his long tail
There’d be crows of all sizes and colours for sale.
How long would it take us to make our amends
For what we have done to our so-called best friends?
