THE MYSTIC

As farmerís boy he led the ploughmanís horse,
But Love transmuted all the sun-drenched hours
And frozen nights to heavenly intercourse:
He saw God in the glory of the flowers.

In every field of corn he knew the Host,
And Providence in every teeming sod,
In every dove there shone the Holy Ghost,
In every flock he saw the Lamb of God.

Like John, the eagle cleft unvisioned air,
His goatís-hair changed Ė Paul spinning Ė to a tent,
The very sparrows knew their Fatherís care,
And cock called Peter to repent.

The patient oxen spoke of Bethlehem,
The burdened ass walked lightly, as on palms,
Each lonely tree was that elected stem
That held outstretched the Saviourís loving arms.

He knew all Natureís secrets, he would sing
For very joy while speeding to extend
His fellowship to every stricken thing:
All timid creatures knew him for their friend.
