A Walgreens store in Key West, Florida is selling a toy truck that
carries the carcass of a toy “dead deer.” While this is distasteful and
offensive by itself, it is even more so that it is being sold where one
of the nation’s most endangered animals, the Key Deer, is fighting for
survival in the face of extinction. Key Deer were once plentiful until
hunters killed all but about 25 of them, pushing the species to the
brink of extinction. Their numbers began to rebound after hunting them
was banned, but their population still numbers only 600-800 individuals
today
Please contact Walgreens and politely urge them to remove these
offensive toys from their shelves and to enact a policy of not selling
hunting-themed toys in the future.

Below is a
sample letter that you can use for ideas, but please personalize the
letter, as form letters have much less of an impact.
| Dear Walgreens:
It has come to my attention that in the Roosevelt Blvd.
store in Key West, FL, Walgreens is selling a “toy” truck
that is carrying the carcass of a toy “dead deer.” This toy
is inappropriate for children since it promotes violence
toward wildlife and I urge you to discontinue the sale of
this toy immediately.
By glorifying and sanitizing the violence that is hunting
through the selling of this toy, Walgreens is supporting the
destruction of wildlife and their natural habitat. Hunting
is a violent activity that causes the deaths of tens of
millions of animals annually and victimizes hundreds of
adults and children, both hunters and non-hunters. Walgreens
should not be a part of this kind of activity.
Out of respect for wildlife and nature please remove the
offensive toys from the shelves and enact a policy of not
selling toys that glorify the violence known as sport
hunting. I await your response to my concerns.
Sincerely,
|
