Letter: Lead In Food Bank Donation

To the Editor:

As hunters congratulate themselves after donating meat to food banks, they fail to consider the likelihood that their donations are contaminated with a scientifically proven neurotoxin.

Two years ago a North Dakota physician and big game hunter found lead bullet fragments in 60 percent of meat samples being donated to food pantries. As a result, the state Department of Health ordered food pantries to discard the venison they had not yet distributed.

With millions of pounds of lead being blasted by hunters into animals and the environment each year, food banks should not accept the meat of hunted animals before submitting it for safety testing. While some hunters smugly ask how many hungry people anti-hunters feed, we ask “how many hungry people do sport hunters poison?”
