Joe’s SAMPLE LETTER: RE: S6801-A – EXPANSION OF RIFLE HUNTING IN NYS
05/19/2012
Dear Assembly Member:
As a resident of New York State (out
of state residents should begin the letter with something like “As an
American who regularly visits New York to enjoy the outstanding outdoor
recreational activities the state offers...”) I oppose S6801-A and urge you
to do the same. This bill would expand the use of rifles for hunting and
should be opposed for reasons of public safety and wildlife protection.
Rifle hunting is a dangerous sport that impacts the non-hunting public.
Serious rifle hunting accidents occur every year and the victims are both
members of the hunting community and members of the public who find
themselves in the line of fire due to an errant shot or being mistaken for
wildlife. Children have been shot and killed by hunters firing their weapons
from distances of over one-mile away. Because such incidents take place
during every hunting season, any expansion of rifle hunting is unsafe and
unnecessary. Despite their feelings to the contrary, hunters already enjoy
liberal hunting regulations, long seasons, and generous bag limits. The
defeat of this bill would not change this.
Thanks you for considering my
strong feelings on this issue. Your response will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, (your name)
