ONE OF OUR SUPPORTERS, TERENCE J. CAWLEY, WROTE THE FOLLOWING
TO HIS ELECTED OFFICIALS:
To: President of the United States; Vice President of the United
States; Governor of Pennsylvania; Senators of the United States
of America
Honorable Sirs:
My letter may give you some insight into the recent rash of
gun criminality.
I am a gun owner and consider myself a responsible citizen
but must say that in my experience there is little or no regard
for the law within the gun culture. The more civilized nations
have long ago contained and controlled the use of weapons but that
has not happened in this country.
In your world it is perhaps unthinkable that a weapons projectile
might cross your yard (campus, schoolyard, highway, park) at several
thousand feet per second, but in my world this is not only a distinct
possibility but is perfectly legal as well. I have reason to believe
this is the case throughout rural America and as long as the state
and federal governments can be duped and bullied by an irresponsible
minority, this will continue.
It is no mystery to me that there are murders in small town
America -- the younger generation is bringing to fruition the violence
and lawlessness which has been thriving in rural America for many
years.
I might add that any government which turns a blind eye to
its vandals and a deaf ear to its honest citizens soon earns the
contempt of both.
