Squirrel Hunting Could Be Disastrous

Bob Hood's article on Squirrel hunting
(Squirrel hunting is a good first step toward bigger game, 10/12/03) left out
an important detail - that hunting is a very dangerous sport that often
has a disastrous effect on children.
The number of hunting accidents involving
children is nothing short of staggering. Recent incidents include:
Sixteen-year old Jason McDowell of Indiana, who was shot with an arrow while
hunting with a sixteen-year old friend who mistook him for a deer
(October 5);
A 14-year old Utah boy who was hospitalized after being shot in the
torso while hunting (September 5), and many others.
In fact, the International Hunter Education Association reports that sixteen Texas
children aged nineteen and younger were reported victims of hunting accidents in
calendar year 2001.
Instead of taking a child to the woods
hunting with a gun to kill helpless and harmless squirrels, take him or
her out to shoot squirrels with a camera. You will teach the child valuable
lesions about respecting nature and her creatures, and you may also be
saving that child's life.
