Sheriff Calls Off Search for Missing Hunter

10 December 2003

Associated Press

LEWISTOWN _ The Fergus County sheriff's office has suspended the ground search for a missing Minnesota man who apparently became lost while hunting in the Missouri River Breaks.

Fergus County Sheriff Tom Killham said bad weather and the extremely rugged terrain of the area prompted his office to suspend the search for 52-year-old Allen Theis of Eden Valley, Minn.

Heavy snow and gumbo mud had made the area too treacherous to continue the search for now, he said. "I'm just not going to ask people to go down into that," he said Monday.

Killham said smaller searches may resume once conditions improve, and officials still planned occasional flyovers to see if they can locate Theis.

Theis was last seen two weeks ago.
