CODY, Wyo. - No charges will be filed in the shooting
death of a Cody man at a hunting camp last month.
Park County Sheriff Dave Doyle said the Oct. 1 shooting
during an elk hunting trip in a remote area northwest of Cody was in
self-defense and, therefore, justified.
''The physical evidence and witness accounts were
investigated thoroughly,'' he said.
Maurie Buffington, 57, bled to death after being shot in
the knee. Doyle said he was shot during an argument with another hunter,
Randall Turechek, of Cody.
According to Doyle, the men began fighting about an
earlier argument over who would shoot the first elk. Buffington had
apparently shot his elk out of sequence, Doyle said.
Turechek shot Buffington in the knee after he and another
hunter from Georgia, who has not been identified, unsuccessfully tried to
stop Buffington from hitting Turechek in the head with a flashlight, Doyle
said.
Both men tried to stop the bleeding by applying
tourniquets to Buffington's leg, but he ultimately bled to death, Doyle
said.
