Authorities: Hunting Death was an Accident

Associated Press
1 December 2003

WATERTOWN, S.D. - The weekend death of Roger Rector, a former football coach and educator in Watertown, was an accident, authorities said Monday.

Rector was fatally shot with a high-powered rifle while hunting deer early Saturday in Clark County. Two others were hunting with Rector at the time.

Clark County State's Attorney Richard Neill said there's no question Rector's death was an accident. But he said investigators planned to return to the scene to try to determine if he was shot by one of the two other hunters with him or if he fell on his rifle.

Neill said he doesn't expect any charges to be filed.
